A recent study in the journal Nature Climate Change found that by 2100, the heat index of many locations withing the Persian Gulf could reach 170 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the limit for human survival. These cities include Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Mecca where millions of Muslims make a pilgrimage to every year. The extreme heat is already affecting some human activity. For example, the 2022 Qatar World Cup is being played in the winter rather than in the summer as normal due to excessive heat.
Some of the heat is being caused by pollution from the oil drilling occurring in the Persian Gulf area, although a large part of the warming is on a world scale cause by pollution throughout the earth. The cities being threatened house millions of people and are some of the newest and fastest growing cities in the world. An event making the area uninhabitable would cause a massive relocation crisis as well as economic loss. Perhaps most important is that simply the risk of this occurring display the incredible effect global warming is having on the earth and the massive changes to global climate that are going on right now.
