This week, the California Fish and Game Commission delayed the recreational Dungeness crab season scheduled to begin Saturday. They have also suspended the rock crab season which is usually year round. High levels of domoic acid, a neurotoxin harmful to humans and other animals, have been found in crabs throughout the California coast. This toxin is produced by algae that are thriving in the warm Pacific conditions.
The shifting ecosystem in the Pacific coastal waters is causing profound effects. Many sea lions suffering seizures have been found on the California Coast. The large algae bloom stretches from the Channel Islands near Santa Barbara to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. The algae bloom is also not tapering off as the ocean remains abnormally warm.
