A recent study from new data found that enormous icebergs breaking off of Antarctica actually serve to slow global warming. These icebergs leave a large trail of minerals when they melt which act as fertilizers for ocean algae. The algae then blooms and absorbs carbon dioxide from the environment. These algae absorb approximately the amount of carbon dioxide that a country the size of Sweden or New Zealand emits in a year.
Although it is nice that the melting icebergs slow global warming, it should be a goal to stop them from melting. This just slows the damage of global warming and in no way will fix the problem. Despite this, it is quite interesting to see the unexpected effects of global warming throughout the world.
